RPA Architects were approached at the annual Henley Design Day and subsequently appointed to design and deliver this extension to a pretty semi-detached Victorian house in Henley-on-Thames. Our clients wanted a contemporary aesthetic which would be sympathetic to and enhance the traditional features they loved within the original house - they were also keen to take advantage of views over their well-established and very attractive garden.

The brief was to design an inter-linked and zoned open space which would provide flexible living, a dining area and a new kitchen. Importantly it was stressed that the space should be light and airy. Matching bricks were sourced and dark grey roofs match the natural slate of the house: pre-weathered zinc to the garden room and a single-ply membrane to the flat roof. High quality materials and detailing ensure a sympathetic contemporary addition.

An existing conservatory and garage building made way for the extension and a design which provided subtle variations in height and form has resulted in a space which is both inviting and relaxing to be in. A flat-roofed link element with a large rooflight over the dining area connects a low mono-pitched garden room at the rear to the original house. The garden room itself has high level windows which cast light throughout its valuted interior. Rooflights are located over the kitchen and the feeling is one of light flooding in to a warm and inviting space.

Wide-format smoked European oak engineered floor boards have been laid over an underfloor heating system, and ultra-slimline sliding door frames ensure uninterrupted views over the new stone terrace to the gardens beyond. Attention to detail is key, and everything from the bronzed electrical faceplates to the choice of light fittings, the selection of joinery and the design of the kitchen has come together to provide a satisfyingly peaceful and mature addition with visual appeal at every turn.

" RPA Architects were a pleasure to work with on our project, with their professional and sympathetic approach to design. They creatively enhanced our original concept and then smoothly managed the process through planning consent to build completion. We now have a stunning contemporary extension to our Victorian house which enhances our property and is giving us much pleasure. Mr and Mrs T, Henley. "
