Smiths Farm Courtyard lies to the rear of Smiths Farm, a much extended C17 timber framed farmhouse which is Grade II listed. The courtyard is adjacent to but not part of Smiths Farm – nevertheless it is ‘curtilage listed’ by virtue of its proximity and former association.
The courtyard is occupied by three distinct buildings - to the east an open C20 structure is the most recent and it currently provides covered parking. To the north there is an older detached brick barn and to the south a third outbuilding is in an extremely poor state of repair - its roof has collapsed and signs warn of danger.
Planning permission has been obtained for two replacement structures, one to the north and one to the south of the open courtyard which is to be retained. Each will accommodate three one-bed units. The proportions of the new buildings are similar to those which exist, sympathetic materials are proposed and features have been incorporate to retain and reflect the agricultural heritage of the site.
